What this is

Four sessions in Vietnam, and now the fifth moves out of the country for the first time. Singapore gets the same format Saigon has been running: one table, no stage, nobody selling anything.

The ShopX coffee chat has one rule. The room sets the agenda. You walk in with a real challenge from the last three months, every challenge goes on the board, the room votes, and we open the one most people want to talk about. When a thread dies we move to the next one. Not when the clock says so.

That is the whole design. The most useful thing in the room is usually the person who has just solved the thing you are stuck on, and you only find them if everyone says out loud what they are stuck on.

Who this is for

Shopify sellers, agency operators, app builders, and DTC founders working in the region. Bring:

  • One challenge from the last three months. A real one, not the polished version you put on LinkedIn.
  • Two sentences about yourself. Name, what your business does. That is the whole intro.
  • A willingness to answer, not just ask. Everyone in the room has solved something someone else hasn’t.

The afternoon

TimeWhat happens
2:00 – 2:15Arrival and mingle
2:15 – 2:20Alva opens. Chris on why the ShopX community exists, and why we run coffee chats and buildathons
2:20 – 3:00Intros. Name, business, and one challenge from the last three months. Challenges go into the app as we go
3:00 – 3:10Vote, read the board, open the top topic
3:10 – 4:15Open discussion. Move on when a thread dies, not on the clock. Re-vote if the room shifts
4:15 – 4:40Closing round. What did you take away today that you didn’t expect coming in, and how does it help you?
4:40 – 4:45Wrap. The upcoming ShopX event, and what’s next for the community

Your challenges go into the app live during the intros, so by 3:00 the whole room can see the board and vote on it. Nothing gets lost in someone’s notebook.

Questions on the table

The board decides the afternoon. But if the room goes quiet, these are the six I’ll put up. All of them come from the same place: AI has moved fast enough that most of the honest answers are still unwritten.

  1. Where AI is worth the cost. Putting AI into an operation costs real time, effort, and people. How do you decide which processes or functions need to be enhanced with AI, and which ones shouldn’t?

  2. What it does to expertise. With AI, the machine takes over the work, and also the processing and dispensing of knowledge itself. In your experience, has that built more domain expertise in your team, or less? And why do you think that is?

  3. Differentiation when the gap closes. For the app builders and agencies in the room: AI can do almost everything now, faster and cheaper, and it flattens the gap between competitors. So how do you differentiate yourself in the market?

  4. When to commit, when to wait. Most of the tools we were using a year ago have already been replaced, and the pace hasn’t slowed. How do you decide when to commit to something and when to wait it out?

  5. Volume versus attention. AI-generated images and video are everywhere now, and the quality has got good enough that most DTC brands are pushing hard on volume. Has that produced a net uptick, or does it make it harder to catch the audience’s attention than before? How do you balance productivity against efficacy?

  6. Agentic commerce. It’s being talked about a lot right now, and it widens the surface where a customer can interact with a brand. Have you seen the impact of it in your business? How does that change the way you think about branding and marketing?

What you take home

  • Answers to the challenge you walked in with, from people who run businesses at your scale in this region.
  • A read on what everyone else is actually stuck on, which is usually more useful than the answers.
  • The room itself. Five sessions in, people keep working together long after the afternoon ends.
